BECKERS -- to many Nashvillians, the name has been synonymous with the word "bakery" for more than half a century. But anyone who didn't know might easily pass the unassuming building at 2600 12th Ave. S. without a second glance.

Inside, no lush red carpet or graceful potted palms beckon shoppers. And no one remembers how long ago they stopped taking personal checks. Nevertheless, customers -- dressed in everything from furs to faded jeans -- wait patiently in a line that threads its way through the clutter of old-fashioned display cases to the counter.
