I moved last year into an 18-year-old, two-story town house (2000 [ft.sup.2]). The original furnace is a 2.5-ton gas fired unit with an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 62%, rated two years ago. The house has an electric central air conditioner.
An energy audit done in June 2003 indicated air infiltration and return duct problems. I revamped the return system and created a second supply truck to feed the first floor. The house was air sealed in October 2003 and postsealing readings indicated a 30% improvement. At that time some duct sealing was done with tape and mastic on exposed parts, but no leakage readings were taken.
The attic currently has about 4-5 inches of loose fiberglass, so it's approximately R-11. I'm planning to upgrade in the next few weeks to R-38.The thermostat is set at 73[degrees]F for cooling and 69[degrees]F for heating. My gas usage increases to 7 [ft.sup.3] per day ($350 per month) during peak heating, and electricity ...
