Nov. 3--Wary of attracting potential opposition criticism, the government yesterday dropped plans by the Commerce Ministry to finance a 6.2-billion-baht buyout of 100,000 tonnes of chicken from local exporters.
Instead, the cabinet opted to have state banks extend low-interest loans to about 20 chicken export companies that have suffered due to the re-emergence of the bird flu.
Exporters have complained to Commerce Minister Watana Muangsook that with raw poultry exports falling sharply since the beginning of the year, stockpiles of frozen poultry now stood as high as 200,000 tonnes due to falling sales.
