Byline: BRIAN MITCHELL
The race for the White House ended Monday with a 16-hour race by both candidates through the handful of states still too close to call.
President Bush bolted through five battleground states -- Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Iowa and New Mexico -- before returning home to Texas.
Sen. John Kerry took in four swing states -- Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio -- stopping twice in Ohio and Wisconsin.
The biggest prizes among them are Florida (27 electoral votes), Pennsylvania (21) and Ohio (20). The victor will have to win at least one and maybe two of the three.
Other swing states include Minnesota (10), Wisconsin (10), Iowa (7) and New Mexico (5).
Bush held a slight but shrinking lead (1.2 percentage points) on average in recent national polls based on likely voters, according to RealClearPolitics.com. Among polls released Sunday and Monday, Bush's lead is just 0.67 point.
