Nov. 2--Economists have raised doubts about whether the government's plans to purchase 100,000 tonnes of poultry meat from local exporters will really benefit farmers.
Commerce Minister Watana Muangsook last week said the government would spend 6.2 billion baht of taxpayers' money to buy 100,000 tonnes of frozen chicken and duck meat from exporters to help ease financial difficulties following the recent re-emergence of the bird flu.
Mr Watana justified the programme as averting job losses and helping farmers and other affected industries such as animal feed producers.
