Nov. 1--UNDERSTANDING HOW WESTERNERS THINK: Recently, I worked with David Padgham, director of the Wall Street Institute (WSI) English school, to facilitate a session on cross-cultural tips in English for 20 white-collar workers who are students at WSI.
After a brief introduction, I showed a seven-minute scene from the comedy Mr. Bean, an annoying excerpt showing five characters acting in different ways. The participants were asked to answer these two questions: "Who is the person that you like most and why?" and "Who is the person that you dislike most and why?"
We noted the responses from six people on a flipchart. They led to my point that we all may look more or less alike on the outside, but inside we see the world differently since we share different values.
