For Herb Baum, corporate ethics boil down to a series of questions. As long as employees treat these questions seriously and answer them honestly, their openness and truthfulness will strengthen the organization.
"These questions are a way to evaluate how you feel about being part of a high-integrity business," said Baum, president and chief executive of the Dial Corp. in Scottsdale, Ariz. "A lot of people don't realize they should be asking themselves these questions." Baum's questions include:
** Have I hidden a mistake from a peer or boss?
** Have I lied to a customer?
** Have I expensed a meal that was not business-related?
Major ethical scandals usually start with individual decisions rooted in dishonesty or deception, says Baum, co-author of "The Transparent Leader."
