Regulators delay Merck review
The FDA wants more data showing that experimental arthritis drug Arcoxia, a cox-2 inhibitor like recently withdrawn Merck drug arthritis Vioxx and the drug's successor on the market, is safe and effective. Details of the FDA's request were not released. Arcoxia is sold in Europe, Latin America and Asia, and is expected to generate $1 bil in sales by '08. Shares fell 1% to 31.31.
Beckman Coulter Q3 rises 17.4%
The lab equipment maker earned 74 cents a share ex items, 11 cents over the year-ago profit and 2 cents over views. A 10% rise in clinical diagnostic sales pushed revenue up 8.6% to $581.2 mil. Beckman Coulter forecast 95-97 cents a share in Q4, below views of $1.03, but it steered its '04 forecasts above views to $3.21-$3.27 a share. Shares rose 3% to 59.50.
