Sponsored by Booksellers for Social Responsibility, the two-year-old ad hoc organization, the discussion at the workshop entitled Social Crisis/ Social Responsibility revolved around ways that independent booksellers can help mobilize and unite their communities. Led by BSR's founding president, Lew Rosenbaum of Guild Books, Chicago, the workshop featured brief presentations by retailers and publishers who have long sought to accomplish those goals, which were given a sense of special urgency by the riots in Los Angeles following the verdicts in the Rodney King beating case. (Many in the audience at the BSR panel were retailers in Southern California.)
