2004 NOV 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Researchers at the Tom Baker Cancer Center and University of Calgary are using the LifeShirt System from VivoMetrics in combination with the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program (MBSR) to help identify how stress-reducing activities can affect symptoms of fatigue, sleep, and autonomic parameters in breast cancer patients.
A better understanding of how psychological and physiological factors combine to affect distressing symptoms associated with breast cancer is expected to lead to behavioral treatments aimed at reducing these symptoms, improving quality of life, and restoring balance among bodily systems.
This study, the first non-intrusive research of its kind, is using the LifeShirt to continuously monitor respiratory and cardiac function to determine sleep disruption, fatigue, and anxiety in 10 patients that previously underwent an 8-week MBSR program, teaching mindfulness meditation, relaxation, and yoga techniques.
"Without the LifeShirt, previous studies measuring sleep and fatigue were not as accurate because they relied solely on self-monitoring by patients," said Linda Carlson, PhD, clinical psychologist, CIHR new investigator and assistant professor at the University of Calgary.
"Using the LifeShirt, patients in the MBSR study were more comfortable thereby limiting their sleep disruption, while allowing us to collect more reliable data in a manner previously not available."
