Electricite de France, the state-owned power giant, is undergoing a profound strategic and financial self-examination that could greatly shrink its global footprint.

The re-think comes in preparation for an initial public offering the government has promised for next year.

In evidence provided to a closed-door commission of inquiry the French government set up under Michel Roulet, a former chairman of Paris-based France Telecom SA, EDF is reported to have indicated plans to withdraw from Latin America.
