Oct. 27--Fast-growing discount airline AirTran Airways plans to supercharge its expansion by buying the Chicago hub of bankrupt rival ATA Airlines for $87.5 million, the airline said Tuesday.
If the deal is approved, AirTran would boost its presence at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport by taking over ATA's nonstop flights to Chicago Midway Airport. And analysts say it will intensify the discount airline's competition with Fort Worth-based American Airlines.
ATA currently operates five flights a day from D/FW to Midway, as well as two flights a day to Indianapolis. It wasn't clear how many flights AirTran plans to operate between D/FW and…
