Chavez prefers his own version of bill

City Councilor Eric Griego will try to override a veto of his bill that would have created a city Office of Inspector General.

Mayor Martin Chavez said Friday he will send a veto message to the council saying he could not sign the measure because it violates the constitutional principle of separation of powers.

Chavez said he supports converting the city's Office of Internal Audit to an Inspector General's Office. But he said Griego's bill is not constitutional.
