In the Nov. 2 election for mayor, Venice voters must choose between a political outsider, who describes himself as a "bull in a china shop," and a smooth-talking incumbent toting tattered baggage.
Challenger Gary Anderson last year lost an election bid for a City Council seat. He now seeks to topple the top person on the seven-member council, two-term Mayor Dean Calamaras.
Calamaras could be vulnerable. During his second, three-year term as mayor:
* City Hall spent heavily from reserve funds while lowering taxes.
* He and the council did not adequately oversee the work of a former city manager, who resigned in January.
