Oct. 15--TAMPA -- Tampa has been selected by the National Association of Black Journalists as the site for its 2009 annual convention, city officials announced Thursday.
The conference is considered a major coup by convention and tourism officials and is expected to attract more than 3,500 journalists, said Norwood Smith, vice president of sales for the Tampa Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The convention, slated for Aug. 1-8, 2009, at the Tampa Convention Center, is expected to generate $2.6 million in spending in the local economy, tourism officials said.
"This is just outstanding news for our community," said Paul Catoe, president and chief executive officer of the Tampa Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Smith said Tampa was selected over two other finalists, Chicago and San Diego.
NABJ officials did not return calls seeking comment.
