Oct. 15--TAMPA, Fla. -- Hillsborough Community College said Thursday that it will open up a swath of prime real estate on Dale Mabry Highway to private developers, but with two significant caveats for the land: Proposed new buildings must be integrated into the school's campus, and the businesses in those buildings must be tied somehow to the school's curriculum.
Real estate experts predict there will be plenty of interest, and HCC officials hope to have a developer and plan picked out next spring.
Bob Chunn, president of HCC's Dale Mabry Campus, said he and other school leaders are inviting private developers to submit plans that would bring a hotel, conference center, restaurant, medical complex, public pool and sports facilities to the 108-acre campus in Tampa.
The school hopes that the prime real estate will attract businesses and facilities that will open up internships and jobs for students in HCC's hospitality, tourism, culinary and medical programs, Chunn said.
HCC also hopes its plan generates more revenue for school programs, opens its campus up to the public and spurs investment in the neighboring Drew Park area, Chunn said.
"We simply can't find anyone who loses in this process," he said.
