The Ferrari 575M, Maserati Coupe and Audi A8 all have something in common with General Motors' compact Opel Astra: Each rides on ZF Sachs' Continuous Damping Control suspension. The Astra represents CDC's first broad-market application. Now the General is considering CDC for North America.

CDC uses electronically variable shock absorbers monitored by an electronic control unit. The system's ECU integrates with the Astra's electronic systems, such as traction control and ABS, and measures factors that include wheel speed to determine road conditions and driver input. Every two milliseconds the ECU adjusts the electric current sent to each shock to provide the appropriate damping force for conditions.

For example, in emergency lane-change maneuvers, CDC counteracts sudden directional changes by increasing the outside suspension's damping rate. The adjustment reduces body roll drastically and helps keep the ...
