Dodge has confirmed with this sketch that it aims to re-create some of the company's early muscle-car magic conjured by the Charger name.
The 2005 Charger, a stout and robust sedan, carries a rakish roofline and the company's large, crosshair face. It will replace Dodge's Intrepid NASCAR entry.
The Charger debuts at the Detroit show in January and, true to its power image, will carry the much-vaunted Hemi engine underhood.
When the Charger first appeared in 1966, it was an enthusiast's dream-with high power, great performance and slick style-that competed and won on oval tracks as well as drag strips. Charger tallied 124 NASCAR wins from 1966 to 1977, with Richard Petty winning 37 races and Bobby Isaac 36.
In the early 1970s, however, thanks to government-mandated emissions constraints and rising gas prices, the Charger began a long and steady fall from car-guy grace. It reached its nadir in 1981 when the company took the once-proud name and attached it to an anemic front-drive coupe in an effort to capitalize on its heritage and sell units.
The new regime at DaimlerChrysler understands it doesn't have the benefit of over-promising and under-delivering, though. "We have to get the product right every time,'' Chrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche said.
Considering how tough this beast appears in sketches, can you imagine what the high-end SRT version will look like?
