More on the new Fords
The continuously variable transmission, not the styling, will make or break the new Ford Five Hundred. Putting a new transmission in a high-volume model is a gutsy move.
I generally like the Chrysler 300's styling, but hangers-on from the Gremlin styling team sawed off the trunk, making it less practical for trips. Ford realized a full-size car deserves a full-size trunk.
Art McDonald, Durham, N.C.
I had been a longtime Ford fan, but not anymore. The new Freestyle looks like the old Ford F-150, and the Five Hundred looks like a Passat. I'm sure they're nice cars, but there is no passion to them.
Maybe Ford has a master plan: Most of the strong-selling Toyota sedans look painfully boring. Perhaps Ford is trying the same thing.
Brad Barbaza, Dearborn, Mich.
