* Chevrolet S3X Concept
Don't be fooled: This small sport/ute concept is aimed at the European market and has style, panache and exceptional fit-and-finish. It is going into production by 2006. It is a seven-passenger mini ute designed and manufactured by GM Daewoo in South Korea-which itself is a surprise and delight-and when the production version launches it will be the first diesel-powered vehicle developed entirely by the Koreans. The large "panoramic'' roof lends a spacious feel. Now scrunch your eyes and take a closer look: Could this be the Saturn Vue or Chevy Equinox reincarnated?
* Opel Astra High Performance Concept
Opel's Astra High Performance Concept, dressed in the series' signature red, will likely appear as a production car at the Geneva motor show in the spring. As well it should, since the car develops a "mere'' 240 hp from 2.0 liters thanks to tuning to the engine's intake, exhaust and turbo- charger. The engine is bolted to a six-speed transmission and the chassis has electronic suspension damping. The hopped-up Astra boasts wider and lower air-intake openings than the Astra GTC that also made its debut at the Paris show, and it has a body kit that works around the car's side and front. The High Performance Concept rides on 19-inch aluminum wheels.
* Aston Martin Vanquish S
If images of Her Majesty the Queen of England and Bernie Ecclestone dance in your head, then allow the fastest production Aston to take up more of your gray matter. With an 18-month wait list on DB9, is there a better time to announce a limited-edition flagship? Only 300 "ultimate Astons'' will be built, 45 to 50 aimed at the States. The 6.0-liter V12 produces 520 hp with 425 lb-ft of torque that pushes this GT from 0 to 62 in 4.8 seconds, and has a top end "in excess'' of 200 mph. How much will this all cost? About $250,000, or $15,000 more than the standard Vanquish.
