Sunny Little Secrets
By Sana Butler
More than 60 percent of tourists to the Caribbean visit only three countries: the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. But you don't have to follow the pack. Some of the best spots are on the smallest islands. Void of sprawling beachfront resorts, these well-kept secrets present the Caribbean as it used to be. They may be harder to get to, but they're well worth the effort:
ST. EUSTATIUS
One of the five islands of the Netherlands Antilles, St. Eustatius restricts buildings to the height of the surrounding palm trees. There are only 69 beds available a night, many in charming gingerbread houses. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy hiking in the crater of the Quill, an extinct volcano. But the island's best treasures lie in the little mom-and-pop museums scattered about, which house rare 17th- and 18th-century artifacts from when St. Eustatius was the trading hub of the Caribbean.
