The Warlord's Son by Dan Fesperman

In this thinking man's thriller, Fesperman, a war correspondent for the Baltimore Sun, turns his sharp eye to Afghanistan. A reporter named Skelly is crossing the border from Pakistan with an exiled warlord who hopes to become a political player and his son, who serves as Skelly's "fixer." Skelly is no suave James Bond; he stakes his life on the translator in the hope of nailing the story of his career. Unlike his hero, Fesperman makes nary a false step in this taut, realistic novel. Newspaper tales of reporters' derring-do will never read the same.
