The machines at Volkswagen's sprawling Wolfsburg factory are relentless. Lined up in the cavernous building, row upon row of tall, skinny robots dip and clamp car parts in place, cutting sheets of steel and screwing in dashboards with precision timing. They labor all through the night without tiring, slowing down or nodding off. Every 24 hours they churn out 800 automobiles, more than any other car factory in the world, and they do so five days a week. The machines would work on days six and seven as well, if their human helpers were willing to forgo their weekend respite.
