KANSAS CITY, Kan. _ Christopher Reeve vowed one day to walk again.

It was one hope he would never realize, but his efforts brought hope to many others with spinal-cord injuries in Kansas City and around the world.

"He was so witty and funny and so full of life, whether he was on stage or in person," said Joy Dobler of Leawood, who met Reeve and his wife, Dana, in St. Louis during treatment for a spinal-cord injury. Dobler lost the use of her legs after a fall in 2001.

"I know what he's done for all of us, and that's to say to us, `Nothing is impossible,'" Dobler said.

Reeve, star of the 1970s and `80s "Superman" movies, died Sunday at age 52. Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down after a horse riding accident nine years ago.

Fans' initial shock of seeing the actor in a wheelchair and speaking haltingly because of a breathing tube quickly gave way to public admiration _ and gratitude from advocates of disabled people.
