Shortly after he awoke on the morning of July 9, John McCarroll of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the driveway of a house he owns that is located next to his own home. The residence had been burglarized in the past, so McCarroll grabbed a flashlight, armed himself with a handgun, and went to investigate.
