If you plan to get into racing any time soon, Ford would like you to consider the new Mustang (page 16). Even as the new production car hits showrooms, Ford is getting ready to launch a race version, and is studying running it in Grand-Am as a factory effort.
Internally known as Boy Racer, the car is powered by a 5.0- liter crate engine producing 420 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque. Dan Davis, Ford's director of racing technology, said the Mustang racer is aimed at drivers interested in showroom stock-type series.
Is Carpentier out?
No one is ready to confirm the split, but it's clear driver Patrick Carpentier will end a seven-year run at Forsythe Racing and leave the Champ Car World Series for the Indy Racing League.
Where will Carpentier land? Red Bull Cheever Racing. Sources say Carpentier signed a multi-year, multimillion-dollar contract with Eddie Cheever's team, where he is expected to replace Alex Barron and team with Tony George's stepson Ed Carpenter. It is not widely believed Eddie Cheever can afford to pay drivers in the millions, and it is assumed Carpentier's salary will be subsidized from outside the team.
Champ Car's loss is the IRL's gain. Carpentier will be the league's first French-Canadian driver and the first with marquee value north of the border.
