** The Ultimate Hydrogen Machine
In Paris BMW sufficiently boggled our minds with the hydrogen-powered H2R. It is powered by a 6.0-liter 282-hp V12, and by liquid hydrogen held in a 45-gallon double-walled tank. BMW says the car will go 180 miles on a full hydrogen load. H2R was designed by American Michael Scully, an avid SCCA member racing in the Sports 2000 class and the guy responsible for the design of the Formula BMW race car.
** Super Touareg
Volkswagen unveiled a $100,000, range-topping version of the Touareg. Set for limited production later this year, the super Touareg is intended to provide stiff competition for performance SUVs like Porsche's Cayenne, BMW's X5 4.8is and Mercedes' ML55 AMG. Power comes from the Phaeton sedan's 6.0-liter W12 engine. With 450 hp and a heady 442 lb-ft of torque, awd and an uprated six-speed automatic gearbox, VW claims the ute accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.9 seconds, with top speed limited to 155 mph. To cope with the added performance, VW retuned the Touareg's suspension, with a lower ride height, stiffer springs and dampers, and towering 20-inch wheels shod with 275/40 tires. It also features revised bodywork including new bumpers, wider side sills, pronounced wheel arch extensions and an added spoiler mounted over the rear window. ...
