Jan. 1--For almost 60 years Singha (lion) ruled the local beer market. But now Chang (elephant) is firmly in control after a decade of marketing.

Chang, made by liquor tycoon Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, claims at least a 60 percent share of the local beer market while Singha's share has slipped to 30 percent from more than 90 percent.

Boon Rawd Brewery, the producer of Singha beer, has tried in vain to regain its market share. It petitioned the Trade Competition Committee, charging that Beer Thai (1991) Co, the brewer of Chang, had forced its sales distributors to buy the beer if they wanted to buy white spirits from ...
