Jan. 27--STATESVILLE, N.C.--Iredell County's 6-month-old farmland preservation district program has already attracted interested farmers representing 1,400 acres of land, the county planner said Saturday.
Another 1,700 acres are under consideration for the protection that comes with being part of a farmland preservation district, Ron Smith told the Iredell Board of County Commissioners during the board's annual planning meeting.
Under the program, farmers agree to keep their lands out of development for 10 years in return for protection against nuisance lawsuits and condemnation actions.
