2004 OCT 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Pioglitazone treatment improves insulin sensitivity, hyperandrogenism, and ovulation rates in women with polycystic ovary syndrome, study results show.

"Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by hyperandrogenism, chronic anovulation, and insulin resistance; long-term consequences include diabetes mellitus type 2," wrote N. Brettenthaler and colleagues, University Women's Hospital, Basel, Switzerland.

These researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial to see if pioglitazone, a thiazolidinedione derivative, improved these three factors. Study subjects - 40 premenopausal women with PCOS…
