Mar. 4--Farmers have pledged four million tonnes of paddy with the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives, against the target of 8.7 million tonnes for the current harvesting season.
With an estimated 730,000 tonnes of Hom Mali rice still held by farmers in the Northeast, the state-funded pledging programme has been extended by one month to March 31.
The BAAC expects about half the outstanding volume will be pledged with the bank.
The programme is intended to ease the plight of farmers struggling with low paddy prices.
