Apr. 5--Aiwa of Japan is closing down its regional subsidiary in Thailand and laying off many of its 140 local employees after the company's acquisition by Sony Corporation.

Aiwa international (Thailand), which markets Aiwa electrical and electronic products, has been folded into Sony Thai Co, in line with the merging of the two companies' operations worldwide.

Awai's Thai unit was established 18 months ago. Employees including Tawat Youngtrakul, general manager for sales, were laid off last month, industry sources said.
