Apr. 2--Tourism operators and officials hope to make the Songkran festival starting on April 13 the best ever in an effort to promote the traditional Thai New Year celebrations as a world-class event.
"We hope to put Songkran on the world calendar, like the Rio carnival in Brazil, and the effort starts this year when Bangkok marks its 220th anniversary," said Suraphon Svetasreni, director of tourism resources development at the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Events would be highlighted in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Samut Prakan and Songkhla, allowing local people and foreign tourists to celebrate the event in different styles, ...
