Apr. 2--Cavalier Telephone has backed away from its plans to halt service to the Bethia phone exchange in southwestern Chesterfield County.

Cavalier has asked the State Corporation Commission for permission to withdraw its application to discontinue service to the Bethia exchange. The exchange incorporates several subdivisions along the U.S. 360 corridor west of Clover Hill High School.

A Richmond-based local phone company, Cavalier competes with Verizon for customers and serves 5,000 telephone access lines in the Bethia exchange.
