May 4--The Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives plans to export 2,400 tons of durians to China, nearly six times the amount shipped last year, in order to prevent a decline in fruit prices.
The first shipment of 1,200 tons of fresh monthong and chanee durians will be sent this month to seven importers based in Beijing, Shanghai and Fuzhou. Another shipment in the same amount is scheduled for next month.
Durian output from the four major producing provinces is estimated to exceed 700,000 tons this season. Chanthaburi will produce 450,000 tons, followed by Rayong with 120,000 tons, and Trat and Prachin Buri with 80,000 tons each.
