May 3--Asean members expect to enter the first stage of tariff reductions, under a planned Asean-China Free Trade Area, by early next year, according to a Commerce Ministry official.
Asean economic officials are scheduled to discuss the plan with Chinese counterparts in Beijing on May 15 and 16.
Both sides intend to issue ministerial declarations on the free-trade pact and framework for negotiations by end of this year.
