Telephone Operators Urge Thailand Government to Fill Vacuum.

May 1--Private telephone operators yesterday called on the government to enforce the Telecommunications Business Law and name the cabinet as a regulator to fill the vacuum created by the absence of a national telecoms regulator.

Supachai Chearavanont, president of TelecomAsia Corp Plc, said TA's legal experts believed the cabinet had authority to step in until the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) was set up.

Selection of the powerful NTC is 18 months behind schedule, bogged down by disputes over vested interests and the suitability of candidates. Consequently, major issues such as telecom concession conversions and interconnection charges remain unresolved.
