Oct. 7--The sudden shortage of flu vaccine has sparked a call for more modern approaches to the vaccine's development, a slow process. More efficient technologies are likely years away.

Scientists and government officials -- including Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson -- say the kind of crisis facing the nation could be avoided if more investments were made in vaccine manufacturing techniques that did not rely on millions of fertilized hens' eggs.

The egg-based approach takes about six months, too long for any company to produce additional vaccine to meet anticipated demand in the United States for the upcoming flu season.
