Oct. 7--A day after half the nation's flu vaccine was barred from the market, doctors, hospitals and senior citizens scrambled to track down scarce flu shots on Wednesday, but often were shut out.
Physicians who ordered hundreds of shots as early as January said they called suppliers to check on their deliveries, only to find they would get just a handful or no shots at all this flu season.
Fort Lauderdale geriatrics specialist Linda Groene said she had more than 100 senior citizens on a waiting list and had been assuring them as recently as Wednesday morning that vaccine would be coming.
Then the supplier called.
"We ordered 300 but we're not going to get any this year. We'll have to call our big list of patients and tell them, 'Get it where you can,' like at the Publix," Groene said.
Doctors said they fear that many seniors, especially frail elderly, will simply skip getting immunized because they don't have the stamina to hunt down a location giving flu shots or wait in line for an hour.
