After raving ecstatically about the Boston Baroque's period instruments' version of Handel's Water Music not long before, I couldn't wait to hear what they had done with Bach's four Orchestral Suites. In fact, what they've done with them is about the same thing they did with Bach's Brandenburgs, produced perfectly acceptable, perfectly enjoyable, and appropriately spirited accounts that left me largely unmoved.
It's hard to say why. Every piece of music is in place; every nuance seems taken care of. The result for me, however, was static. The fast movements are quick and lively, and slow movements are unrushed; yet there seemed to be something lacking, that extra spark that could have made them stand out ...
