Jul. 8--Soybean aphids, which became a menace in southeastern Minnesota fields last year, are just starting to climb -- and feed -- on plants again.
"We in this area are just picking up low numbers right now," says Lisa Behnken, extension educator for agriculture based at Rochester. Farmers should start scouting their fields next week through July 20 to detect the insects before they can multiply to large numbers, she advised.
Growers can get an update on the prospects for an aphid invasion this year at two field events in Olmsted County on Tuesday. There is no fee for admission.
