Sep. 6--Mitr Phol Sugar Corp has been refused permission to import 50,000 tons of raw sugar from Brazil, because the current world sugar price slump would eventually affect local sugarcane prices, the Cane and Sugar Board ruled yesterday.
The board said low world prices did not justify the imports of raw sugar to be refined for export as proposed by Mitr Phol, the country's largest sugar producer.
The board is concerned that the sugar price slump would finally affect local planters, taking into account the current 70:30 revenue-sharing system between local planters and millers.
