Sep. 5--Severe drought in the northeastern provinces of Thailand has forced thousands of farmers and farm workers to leave their land and head for the cities where labour-intensive jobs and independent occupations are still available.

Some find work at construction sites, others are hired by factories and many keep looking. But few consider themselves luckier than Sombat Rakpong from Roi Et.

From earning less than 100 baht a day farming, Mr Sombat now pockets 500 baht on average from a much more independent job -- selling fried insects and worms.
