Oct. 2--Shrimp farmers have called for tougher action from the government in dealing with the European Union on its "zero tolerance" shrimp and poultry inspections.
Payoong Pattarakulchai, president of the Freshwater Area Shrimp Farmers' Association, said the EU had stopped inspecting 100 percent of Vietnamese shrimp shipments after Hanoi strongly protested against the practice.
He said that Nguyen Thi Hong Minh, Vietnam's vice-minister of fisheries, had called the EU's "zero-tolerance" antibiotic residue policy unrealistic and a technical barrier that intentionally obstructed food exports from Asean countries.
