As oil prices breached the $50 mark again last Friday, the dour prophets who foresee the imminent collapse of the oil age could have been forgiven for saying "I told you so." Rebel militias had threatened to attack oil-company pipelines in Nigeria, which pumps 2.3 million barrels a day; in Iraq, unrelenting violence made prospects for that country seem even bleaker.
