Nov. 2--The country's main power authority plans to extend the operating life of its existing plants because it is cheaper than building new ones or refurbishing and starting up units that have been closed down.
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) says the move will stabilise power supplies and follows its decision to postpone electricity purchases from two delayed coal-fired plants.
Egat governor Sitthiporn Rattanopas said the lifespan of the existing plants would be extended to 40 years from the regular 25 years. The plants have a combined generating capacity of 4,000 megawatts.
