Nov. 1--Declining paper prices in the world market are hurting domestic manufacturers, many of whom may be forced out of business if the prices plummet further.
Somboon Chuchawal, president of Siam Pulp and Paper Plc (SPP), said the price of writing and printing paper was hovering around $720 per ton, below the cost of $1,000, while kraft paper was $400 per ton, also under the cost of $550. Under such circumstances, the business was no longer viable.
"Everyone is in trouble and many of them may be bankrupt if the prices continue to plummet. But we hope things will not get worse next year," he said.
