Oct. 4--VISITOR ARRIVALS GAIN SHARPLY: The Thai tourism industry reported 5.51 million arrivals in the first half of this year, up 28.22 percent over the first half of 2003, according to figures just released by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
The figures included a solid increase of 23 percent in business travellers to 471,871 and an even higher rise of 53 percent in convention delegates to 53,668, a clear reflection of the positive spinoff from economic growth.
The reason why the comparative growth over the first half of 2003 seems unusually high is because of last year's Sars crisis and the Iraq war, which plunged regional tourism to historic lows, from which the industry has clearly now bounced back.
