Oct. 5--Operators of hypermarkets and department stores have proposed new operating hours for the government to consider at today's cabinet meeting.
The existing hours, which have been in effect for a month as part of a government-initiated energy conservation attempt, have dealt a blow to their operations, they claim.
The proposed new hours for big stores and shopping centres are 10 am to 10 pm Monday to Friday, and 9 am to 10 pm Saturday and Sunday and to 12 midnight during special events such as midnight sales.
The government last month limited the opening hours of businesses with retail space exceeding 10,000 square metres to 11 am to 9:30 pm Monday to Thursday, 11 am to 10 pm on Fridays, and 10 am to 10 pm on weekends.
Siripol Yodmuangcharoen, the director-general of the Internal Trade Department, admitted sales of shopping centres and hypermarkets had been affected because their operating hours were cut to 77 per week, down from as many as 100 to 115.
The proposed plan would result in operating hours of 85 to 95 a week, Mr Siripol said. ...
