As Americans get older and cosmetic surgery goes mainstream, the battle against wrinkles is heating up.

Allergan's Botox is the most famous anti-wrinkle treatment, but older ones are still in use.

Collagen, the injectable animal-tissue derivative first introduced in the 1980s, remains a popular way to smooth out wrinkles and plump up lips.

Inamed has been the chief player in the collagen market. Its brands include Hylaform as well as a couple of newer products: CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast, which are derived from human tissue.

The market is getting more crowded. The start of the year brought the launch of Restylane, an injectable gel sold by Medicis. The product helped Medicis turn around its flagging earnings. It expects Restylane to dominate sales in the foreseeable future.

How does it really stack up against collagen? On Sept. 30, Mitchel Goldman, author of 11 dermatology books and professor at the University of California-San Diego's medical school, presented the results of a study he did comparing Restylane with two brands of collagen in specific parts of the body.
